Season round-up 2005/6
The 1st team started the season in buoyant mood following a good preseason and where confident of doing well in the South league division 3a. Following a good result in the first game against Ashford which saw them claim an easy 2-0 win, they found out the season was going to be more of a challenge as they went down 5-2 to Buckingham who eventually won the league. The lack of goals which was to prove a problem all season cost them dearly in the next game as they lost to Henley. Then came a defeat by a well organise Oxford Uni, despite a good performance by West Hampstead. The team we left a little shell shocked by this, but this was buoyed by the arrival of three new players.
The inability to score again proved a problem in the next game as West Hampstead went down 1-0 to local rivals Hampstead and Westminster. Finally West Hampstead played the hockey they all new they could with the new players settling in and got a good 7-0 win against Windsor, this was to be the turning point of the season, and they gain a victory against Teddington in the next game with O'Donovan scoring with the last hit of the game. These two wins were followed by victory again the following week with a wonder goal by Hudson, the girls where now on a high and playing good hockey and knew they could beat second in the table Newbury, and playing some great hockey they did this taking them into the Christmas break 4th in the table.
West Hampstead started after Christmas as they had left with a comfortable victory over Ashford, the girls where now up for the challenge of Buckingham the league leader. Playing well they couldn't hold Buckingham but gave them a fright as they lost 4-2, a much improved performance to the pre Christmas game. With this confidence the Ladies 1s went on to win the next two games, beating Henley with the final hit of the game and comfortable beating local rivals Hampstead and Westminster. Another top of the table clash followed with Oxford University, unfortunately the students proved too strong again. Victory at Windsor was followed by a draw with Teddington, with Tyrell saving a final minute penalty flick and another with Wycombe Rye. The season end with a hard fought defeat at Newbury, followed by some hard partying after the game. Player of the year went jointly to Foster and Hutchins. Top goal score was Hudson and Williams closely followed by Harbison who played half the games.
