According to Wikipedia: “5 (five) is a number, numeral, and glyph. It is the natural number following 4 and preceding 6.”
Not to be confused with the Famous Five, the West Hampstead Fives is a hockey team playing in Northwest London rather than the disturbingly seedy series of innuendos, racist undertones and paedophiliac fantasies of Enid Blytonp>
To understand the Fives as they stand tall today one must delve deeper into the history of the institution…
The Fives last three seasons (going back further is a futile exercise and given that the author wasn’t around would involve quite a degree of imagination) have all been both enjoyable and successful, finishing a promising third in the first season and missing promotion by just a few points we knew we had both the individuals and the right team mentality to finish it off the next season, which we promptly did, winning the league with a style of play and teamwork often praised out by opposition captains.
Last season then put us in a higher division with a much changed team to merge together. Though starting well as we began to find our feet in the new league, fielding the same team each week became difficult particularly in defense and goalkeeping which took its toll on our results. Despite this the team played well, learning what each player had to bring to the table and finishing respectably mid table in a new division.
This season, the divisions have been reshuffled meaning that no teams have come down but we will be seeing more of the old grudge games against old rivals. These teams should not be underestimated as the strength of our old rivals has clearly been improving and we’ll face at least two teams back on the back of back to back (backity-back-back-back… back) promotions. A consistent and dedicated turnout from the fives has no excuses however for not giving any opposition a proper spanking to send them back down whatever hole they’ve crawled out from.
