Goalkeepers Corner

The Club is committed to getting the very best out of it’s goalkeepers, and we believe we are one of the few clubs to not only offer access to suitable goalkeeping kit, but also offer regular specialised goalkeeper training sessions

Fortnightly sessions held at the clubhouse grounds ensure that not only are the regular keepers kept in top shape for Saturday matches, but we also aim to give training in the basic goalkeeping skills so there is no reason for a team to be left with an untrained person in goal for a league match.

These sessions vary, but in the past have included:

  • fitness exercises aimed specifically at a keepers short sharp movements
  • technique coaching
  • drills to improve balance, kicking and recovery
  • lateral movement and diving drills
  • basic “trial” sessions for first time keepers

We are also in the privileged position to be able to offer our keepers the chance to train with John Hurst, the current England Assistant Coach and Goalkeeper Coach, as well as part of the squad at the Seoul Olympics. John is a highly experienced coach who tries to take bimonthly training sessions. He has given our club keepers many helpful points of advice in the past which have been of great use in game situations.

All of our keepers are encouraged to attend weekly squad training sessions; team coaches are always happy to see a keeper at their sessions, and it allows for more varied drills to be set up which aid all players in the team.

The Club recognises that goal keeping kit is an expensive investment, and so tries to make this as easy as possible for new keepers to the club by supplying suitable and safe kits. We aim to ensure that each specialised keeper is happy with any club kit which they make use of, and that there is also kit available for teams to use if there is not a specialised keeper available.

As with any field player, the Club supports a selection policy which reflects ability, commitment and training attendance.
