West Hampstead Hockey Club

West Hampstead Hockey Club

West Hampstead Hockey Club fields a range of teams, both male and female, and we have an excellent social calendar (we’re a friendly club and it’s a great way to meet new people if you’re new to London)!

There are thousands of reasons why you’d want to choose West Hampstead Hockey Club, we’ve selected the 10 most important ones for you to ponder…

10 very good reasons to join West Hampstead Hockey Club

  1. 8 men’s teams and 6 women’s means…

a)We have a level of hockey for everyone, from the Mens and Ladies 1st XI in the South Premier league to the “I haven’t even got a hockey racquet, but can I play anyway” league.

    b) You can partake because you have a serious competitive streak that needs an outlet or just because you want something fun to do on your weekends that doesn’t involve a drill or a lawn mower.

  2. Drinks are half price for Happy Hour…

That means you can buy 6 shots of vodka and a lucozade sport for only £3.50. Most Saturdays will see a fine selection of members staying at the club after their game right through ’til kicking out time, taking advantage of Happy Hour and avoiding showering for 6 hours.

  3. We’re friendly

So friendly in fact that 8 out of 10 members have met their future spouse at the club, and the other 2 are having affairs. Married couples also get a discount, which is arguably more important than any diamond ring.

  4. Hockey all year round…

With all 12 teams playing from October to March at league level, and summer friendlies for the remaining months – you can devote your entire life to hockey if you so wish. Furthermore, the club sends teams to numerous summer tournaments in such far flung places as Holland and Reading.

  5. A social life in a box…

New to the area? Looking for some new friends? With a social event for every month of the season, you will soon find yourself rubbing shoulders with everyone in the club, not just your team mates. So even if you do find yourself in a team full of w*nkers, you’re bound to still find someone who you’d like to converse with.

  6. Location, Location, Location…

With West Hampstead itself benefiting from 3 tube/trainlines and the club house being just a 5 minute walk from each, it couldn’t be easier to get to. The majority of teams play at Brent Cross which is also easily accessed via the Northern line, or for the adventurous – a C11 Bus! Further more, with the clubhouse being located just off West End Lane (West Hampstead’s high street), the rest of the area’s dining and late night drinking establishments are just a few stumbles away.

  7. Not just hockey…

West Hampstead Hockey Club is part of the Cumberland sports club, which offers discounted memberships to non-hockey related activities such as cricket, tennis, squash and a gym.

  8. It’s reasurringly expensive…

Like Stella. Membership and annual subs aren’t cheap, but that means we don’t get people from Hendon applying. It should also be said that you get your money’s worth, especially if you take advantage of Happy Hour.

  9. We’re winners…

There’s nothing worse than belonging to a club where the majoirty of teams lose every week. The clubhouse becomes a miserable place and no-one wants to play. Luckily, West Hampstead are in the habit of winning – with half of all teams getting promoted most years. This is largely due to the regular influx of new players at every level of the club and because…

  10. We have coaches…

Not the bus type. All teams have weekly training, run by experienced teachers of hockey, qualified to an appropriate level. We even offer pre-season fitness training for those who over-indulged on ice cream over the summer.
